Landing of the Urban Rebels  Maya co-directed IEvolve Theater Group's production of Landing of the Urban Rebels, written by Kongit Farrell in December. Maya enjoyed working with a group of talented actors through this piece that explores stereotypes and perceptions of the African American experience. The show had a limited run at the Flight Theater in Los Angeles. Maya's short film, White Space, is nominated for a 2013 Black Reel Award and won BEST SHORT at the 2012 Hollywood Black Film Festival and BEST SHORT at the 2012 Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival and a $5,000 prize good for post production services at Splice. White Space was also awarded BEST IN CATEGORY and BEST IN FEST at the 2012 Co-Kisser Poetry Film Festival and an INDIE SOUL Special Recognition Award at the 2012 Boston International Film Festival.  Minnesota Department of Health WIC Program Maya is the new face of WIC Minnesota, an important program for the nutritional needs of families. |

Cave Canem XII: Poems 2008-2009 and Cave Canem XIV: Poems 2010-2011 Maya's poems Mascon and Bones will be included in these much anticipated anthologies from Cave Canem and Willow Books! Student Creativity Festival, Bemidji Minnesota: Maya presented her popular workshop, Creative Careers from Page to Stage, to 5th-8th Grade participants at the January 2012 Festival. |
White Space Poetry Project Residency News!  Maya screened White Space for students at Sheridan Arts Magnet in Minneapolis, MN in April and May 2012. Students had the chance to work with Maya developing their own poetry. Minnesota Public Radio followed White Space into the classroom during a recent interview with Euan Kerr. In May 2012, Maya was a guest presenter at Success Beyond the Classroom's Young Author's Conference in Arden Hill's, MN. She presented the workshop, Taking Up Space, a White Space screening and poetry workshop, to over 300 students during the four-day event. White Space Screening and Live Poetry performance: Maya curated an accessible White Space screening and live poetry performance in collaboration with VSA Minnesota and The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, MN on January 7th, 2012. The event included performances by Raymond Luczak, Khary Jackson and Herschel McPherson. |
